“A feminist is anyone who recognizes the equality and full humanity of women and men."
- Gloria Steinem
In September 2015, the United Nations created the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which consists of 17 goals that member states would like to achieve by 2030. These goals tackle common global issues and encourage countries to move towards more peaceful, and prosperous societies, in a global partnership. SDG #5, to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, is one of the 17 SDGs that the United Nations deemed crucial towards the betterment of our global society. This is the Sustainable Development Goal that this committee will tackle as the UN Women committee.
This committee will challenge delegates to discuss important issues as they pertain not only to gender equality but also to the LGBTQ+ community. A focus on the rights of transgender people and their participation in society is a topic that this committee will tackle. Delegates will also have the opportunity to discuss a diverse set of topics such as education, reproductive rights, and gender parity, and they will have to consider how these topics play a role in gender equality. The promotion of gender equality in the workforce, a specific mandate of the International Labour Organization, is another critical factor that delegates will be able to tackle when coming up with resolutions that will address the global issues brought up in committee.
