United Nations Development Program: Power, Profit, and Human Cost: Blood Diamonds
Behind the allure of polished gems lies a darker reality, blood diamonds, mined in conflict zones and often linked to violence, exploitation, and environmental destruction. This committee will explore the ethical, political, and economic implications of the global diamond trade, focusing on the role of governments, corporations, and international bodies in regulating or enabling these practices. Delegates will grapple with questions such as: Should nations impose stricter sanctions or pursue trade bans? How do we balance economic development with ethical sourcing? Who bears responsibility for enforcing global standards like the Kimberley Process?
This committee will assess the role of diamonds in fuelling conflicts in states like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone, Botswana, Central African Republic, and more. It will discuss ways to improve the Kimberley Process and ultimately aim to put a stop the illegal movement of rough diamonds.
